BMW 318i M40
BMW M40 is a piston engine with a SOHC inline-four M10 replacement and was produced from 1987 to 1995. It uses a camshaft belt like M20 6 cylinder. Displacement ranged from 1.6 L to 1.8 L. M43 is a direct successor, who wore a chain driven camshaft, but in 1989 the BMW also released the M42, higher performance four-cylinder DOHC engine with dimensions of the same block with 1.8 liter M40.

Motronic 1.3 M40 engine uses fuel injection, hydraulic tappets and have known for ticking over time, this is usually caused by wear and tear due to oil starvation and poor maintenance, M40 engine is also more susceptible to wear and tear than any other engine E30 lobes, usually caused by blocked spray bar oil and a combination of poor materials. When the cam is used, the engine can not rev high and the only solution is to replace it.
