The 3 Series convertible is also known as the coupe rental cars in the BMW website. This is the first model in BMW's lineup with a folding hardtop roof aluminum 3-piece, as previously (
3 Series E46) with no convertible (
E63 6 Series, E85 Z4) were soft-tops. The new convertible is also the center of many new technological advances that BMW and also the recipient of numerous safety performance technology that already exists and that has been upgraded for the new model. The E93 3 Series BMW convertible fix the "Comfort Access" option, by allowing the user to completely raise and lower the folding roof by simply pressing and holding the corresponding button on the key fob. Visibility overall rose 38 percent, thanks to side windows that are 30 percent larger than the
E46 3 Series Cabriolet.
At the time it was first offered, the 3 Series convertible is the only retractable hardtop side by side with the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class (
2-seater roadster) in its price category, the 3 Series to be the only one with a 2 +2 seat configuration .
Other manufacturers have since produced retractable hardtop convertibles in the compact executive (
entry-level luxury) car segment, such as the Lexus IS C and Infinite G37 convertible, to compete with the BMW 3 Series. Although the new
BMW 3 Series convertible is much more expensive than its rivals directly, it has been considered by reviewers as better engineering, in terms of passenger / trunk space (
even with the roof open) and driving dynamics (particularly weight and stiffness chassis).

BMW has instituted a 10-year, 120,000-mile (
190,000 km) warranty on the part, but only in 2007, 2008 and 2009 model year vehicles with the N54 engine. Other model year, to include 2009 models, continue to report HPFP failures. At the end of 2009, sensor Low fuel pressure has been suspected as the cause of a couple of early collapse HPFP by engine tuners such as AMS and CP-E. BMW has engineered a new HPFP models that do not resolve the problem.
