The E36 M3 debuted in February 1992 and be in dealer showrooms in November that year, it was the first M3 powered by a straight-6 engine. In 2012, an E36 M3 driven by Daniel Merkins and Smiley Tim Ryan GotOrgans? competed in the 5000 Alcan Winter Rally, a rally started in Seattle to the Arctic Circle and back, which marked the first time that the M3 has competed in this grueling motorsport event. M3 is the choice of vehicles unprecedented for this rally, however, it proved to be one of the most reliable cars competing in it, never citing damage or starts hard in the cold, and the snow had become.

The E36 M3 is also available as a saloon in the UK for a limited period during 1995-6, in which around 400 RHD models were sold in the UK. There is also the M3 Anniversary Edition only produced in 1999 for Australia. This is the last year of production for the E36, with only 50 coupes and 70 convertibles being made. Furthermore, "BMW Individual" is able to custom design an M3 with specific colored leather, woodgrain and other personalized options including polished magnesium alloy wheels from the Anniversary edition. Convertible does not have the sports seats found in the coupe but still retain all other features.
