BMW GS BMW dual purpose motorcycles off-road/on-road which have been produced from 1980, when the R80G / S was launched, to this day. This refers to both the GS Gelände / Straße (German: off-road/road) or Gelände Sport. GS motorcycles can be distinguished from other BMW models by their longer suspension travel, upright riding position, and a larger front wheel - usually 19 to 21 inches. In May 2009, the 500,000 th GS produced, R1200GS models.

GS models

GS has been available with a variety of different machines, including single-cylinder, water-cooled twin-cylinder and twin-cylinder air-("airheads") and air / oil-cooled ("Oilheads" and "Hexheads").

Airheads GS

The first shaft driven GS model is a R80G / S with cc air-cooled, flat-twin boxer engine 797.5. BMW 247 engine, which is also equipped with many other bikes in the range BMW, known as the fool. The most appreciated version is R80G/S-PD "Paris-Dakar" model featuring a larger tank, which was launched in celebration of the R80G / S Paris Dakar Rally win. In certain markets the 649.6 cc R65GS version is also available. Early machines used a combined rear suspension and drive swingarm called a Monolever.

In 1995, the introduction of the next generation R-259 or oilhead engine signaled BMW's entry into modern adventure models, with a series of larger displacement models including the R850GS, R1100GS, R1150GS and R1200GS. Later models have electronic engine management, ABS braking, twin spark plugs, and more power than the model stupid. R1200GS this time, sometimes referred to as hexhead as revised cylinder head shape, is 30 kg (66 lb) lighter and, with 105 horsepower (78 kW), more powerful than the R1150GS.
The R1150GS and R1200GS Adventure is available in a version that adds fuel tank larger, lower gearing, suspension upgrades, and optional offroad tires to make the adventure more suitable for difficult off-road trips with heavy loads of equipment and supplies. The two-cylinder horizontally opposed "boxer" engine provides a relatively low center of gravity compared to motorcycles with inline-4 or V-twin.
