By the time the season starts in Australia, many people are surprised by the lack of visible Ferrari pace, especially in qualifying. Alonso and Massa were 1.4 and 2.0 seconds slower than polesitter Sebastian Vettel in his Red Bull RB7 on race. However, Ferrari certainly seems to have decent speed, but their results are still completing substantially hindered by their poor start positions, with Alonso finishing in positions 4 and Mass 7. Not the speed continues to hamper results in both Malaysia and China and after three races, they remain without a podium position and sit third in the Constructors' Championship, which was 55 points ahead of leader Red Bull. Turkey saw a change in pace for Ferrari, as they finally managed to keep pace with Red Bull.

When the Belgian Grand Prix, qualifying conditions vary in meaning Massa will start the race from fourth and Alonso of 8. Start went very well with Alonso taking 5th with immediate and Massa moved up to third. As the race progressed, Alonso is getting closer and pass both Hamilton and team-mate Massa in third. Shortly after Vettel pitted, Alonso and Rosberg took the lead followed at that time, but when the safety car was commissioned, he was not up to the pit and so had to drive on older tires than Vettel. Soon he was followed by Vettel, and as the race progresses, the speed is worse on hard tires which means Alonso will end up losing 2 to 3 for Webber and Button then two laps before the end of the race, finishing 4th in the final.
